They really don't need to show anything, but acknowledging that it can actually happen would be a big step forward for most anime. Sadly, the anime romance arc is generally limited to the leads "officially getting together" in the last episode... if that. ...I've seen that story a hundred times. Stop doing that, anime.

If you adress a story to kids then there are other "taboo's" than adressing it to teens, twens or older audience. This is part of a concept called civilization.

As others have said most movies encompass far more sex than anime yet no one thinks twice about it. Anything PG-13 and above is fair game for the movie industry so why not apply that here? I feel like the lack of sex can sometimes feel odd, especially if it's a mature anime and has a romantic pairing involved.

If it's MA, kids shouldn't watch that, if it's TV 14, etc. But if they're mature enough, I guess they could. I've only watched a couple of MA ones though... The first more "grown up" anime I ever watched you could say was InuYasha. And I was 5. And understood the whole thing. I still watched Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh! though. Like fuck, I don't want to see private parts or anything but keeping it simple like in Nana is fine. I feel like it's more satisfying than the whole romance thing ending up with just kissing. Or like have more mirai nikki style. Nothing stupid and pervy, but better than those cheesy "implied" sex scenes where the camera pans out of view when someones making out and then they suddenly wake up the next morning.

It always comes off as really exploitative and gross and half the time there's a really fucked up rape element to it. It's one of my biggest issues with yaoi is that it's impossible to find a decent story with a mutual attraction where one party isn't pushed to uncomfortable limits and no consent is given before they realize they like it.
