Has anybody else noticed the irony in his name? Before watching this show, I am familiar with The Tragicall History of the Life and Death of Doctor Faustus.
Faust is a person who made a pact with the devil, Mephisto for money, fame, and women. The play is supposed to be based off Johann Georg Faust, who was an alchemist, astrologer, and magician back in the 1500s. So, in one hand, this dude is named after an occultist. But on the other hand, he is named after the tricky demon he summoned. and it's funny that he names himself after a demon being that he wanted to kill the Son of Satan. Since the real Johann Faust was legend to have dealings with demons, such as Mephisto. Well, actually Mephisto was Faust's servant demon after making a deal with Lucifer in the play. But yeah. you could find this all in wikipedia XD |

Yeah. This is really interesting, cool, and awkward. It's like,"you hate demons but you are nick named after one." O_O
Also the Knights of the True Cross? Is that based off the Knights Templar? |

Yinfire your close about the whole true cross thing, this actually all comes from the British Literature course I took this semester in college. Dr Faust didn't make a pact solely for the reasons you listed, doctor faust was said to be one of the most brilliant characters in British literature, he exchanged his soul for knowledge mainly! He wanted to know everything he possibly could. Loop hole that he didn't see coming was the Lucifer can only reveal some things, he can't tell how the world was created since he was born after the fact. And Mephisto is just as weird in the story as he is in the anime, he is the servant in the story, he tends to simply be the comic relief. Oh and the true cross academy comes from the story of Red Cross, from the tale of the Fairy Queen I believe not sure

They put a lot of effort on their shows. Like the British version of Casanova. While some things were added just for humour and interest. It seems like the British REALLY researched Casanova's life to put in the movie. Same thing like this one episode of Dr. Who. I forgot the name of the episode, but I think it had to do with Pompey or whatever. And in the end Dr. Who rescued one guy with this strange name. So, I looked up that guy's name in Wikipedia and that guy really did exist and he really did survive the destruction of Pompey. I wish that we Americans would put as much effort on our shows that the British and Japanese put on theirs. It would really help me enjoy the show more. |

Oh and the true cross academy comes from the story of Red Cross, from the tale of the Fairy Queen I believe not sure :) I don't know; Mephisto seems to have a very important part of the story of the Tragical history of doctor Faust. Here's an excerpt from wikipedia: Mephistophilis is a demon which Faustus conjures up while first using his magical powers. Readers initially feel sympathy for the demon when he attempts to dissuade Faustus from giving his soul to Lucifer. Mephistophilis gives Faustus a description of hell and the continuous horrors it possesses. He wants Faustus to know what he is getting himself into before going through with the plan....Sadly, his attempts fail with Faustus believing that supernatural powers were worth more than a lifetime in hell.......Some scholars argue that Mephistophilis depicts the sorrow that comes with separation from God. Mephistophilis is foreshadowing the pain Faustus would have to endure, should he go through with his plan.[25] In this facet, Faustus can be likened to Icarus, whose insatiable ambition was the source of his misery and the cause of his plight." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tragical_History_of_Doctor_Faustus#The_pact_with_Lucifer |

Mephisto isn't that bad of a guy. He seems really suspicious right now in the episodes.... He's name is pretty obvious too cause...
MAJOR SPOILER !!! (read at oun risk) Spoiler Alert! Click to show or hide He's a demon. Not only that, in a way Rin is his Brother. Cause Mephisto is a son of Satan. Read the manga. it tells you everything. haha. But i knew he was a demon from the beginning. xD |

But i knew he was a demon from the beginning. xD That spoiler is VERY obvious. I already knew that. It's not really much of a spoiler. Remember when Amaimon was on the show? Well, I just written somewhere that Amaimon is a demon. Amaimon is his brother, so it would make him a demon, too. Plus, his name is Mephisto. That's a demon's name. He looks like a demon and he could shape shift. Also, Amaimon asked Mephisto when he was going to go back to the demon world. So, that's a dead give away. and I think Mephisto called Rin a young brother in the same episode where Amaimon first appeared. Thanks anyway, tho ^^ |
