It actually draws on a couple of Shakespeare's plays and mashes them all together.... there are elements of Hamlet (Mahiro), Romeo & Juliet (Yoshino), and The Tempest (Hakaze).
As far as Aika's motivations go... I don't think she was seducing Mahiro or just toying with Yoshino, if anything it seems like her underlying motivation was to bring Mahiro and Yoshino together. Particularly in Yoshino's case, we know that in the past he didn't like Mahiro, and even in the flashbacks with Aika's as well as the current timeline he doesn't seem to care for Mahiro too much. His main reason for sticking around seems to be that he promised Aika that he would more or less look after and be friends with Mahiro (as she said, he was the only person that truly could be). Aika rattles off a lot of somewhat too accurate "intutions" and "premonitions," so I'd say the odds of her (and her death) having something to do with either the Tree of Genesis or the Tree of Exodus are damn near 100%. And now after episode 7... Spoiler Alert! Click to show or hide we also have time travel thrown into the mix, which means she could have been killed by someone on an alternate timeline or by one of the Trees.
The TL;DR version: it seems that Aika both knew that her death was coming and that it would be necessary and that the major role her "life" would have to play would be bringing Yoshino and Mahiro together/uniting them in a cause to work together.

Oh.
When Samon first said she was dead back in episode...I don't remember which, but when he did, I theorized that maybe she was in the the past, and her communicator was somehow able to communicate with the others in their future (their present). Only, she didn't realize it. She has yet to die in her timeline, but she's dead to the people in the "current" timeline. That way it would really be her skeleton, AND she'd be able to talk to them.
But this isn't supposed to be a sci-fi, so that theory can't pan out.
Spoiler Alert! Click to show or hide And then it ended up being something like that. Now I feel cheated, for some reason.

Interesting episode. I guess the final battle should be entertaining if it will take 4 episodes to play out.
Spoiler Alert! Click to show or hide From the start, it was obvious that Mahiro and Yoshino would come to blows. It hasn't happened yet, but they will. They've been setup in opposition to each other, especially over Aika.
The real question is how did Aika die? As Hakaze said, Aika died to ensure that Mashiro would aid Hakaze and the Tree of Genesis. But if Hakaze died 2 years ago, who killed Aika? I think Junichirou, the "neutral" mage, did it.

I like this series, its one of the few that I watch weekly. I think that Yoshino is probably the most dangerous of all the main characters. Both Hakaze and Mahiro are pretty easy to read. Mahiro is violent, but very straightforward. Yoshino, on the other hand, appears to play his cards very close to the chest.

Very interesting twist with Aika and Shakespeare. :)
Spoiler Alert! Click to show or hide Now we know why there were quotes from Hamlet but not The Tempest. It almost seems as if Aika has been directly involved in the Mage's plot, instead of being just a victim.
The fight Mahiro and Yoshino has just started, though Mahiro doesn't know about the boyfriend part yet. Once he learns that, things will get very interesting.
Since the wooden talisman is the bridge between the timelines, I think it's obvious that Yoshino will use that with the bones to bring back Hakaze. After that, it becomes a question of which tree will win.
Good episode.

but seeing as how that's a common theme in the anime, that makes it rather fitting, doesn't it?
oh sweet irony...
